Helping Kids Be Ready When It Matters
Teaching a child how to use 9-1-1 is a small lesson that can make an extraordinary difference.
Patch and the Tallahassee-Leon County Consolidated Dispatch Agency help children learn what an emergency is, how to reach 9-1-1, what information they need to know, and how to stay calm enough to help us help them.
WHAT EVERY CHILD SHOULD KNOW
Depending upon their age, children should learn:
- Their caregiver’s first and last name
- Their home address
- A caregiver’s phone number
- Where their caregiver works
- The difference between an emergency and a non-emergency
- How to call 9-1-1
- That they should stay on the line if they accidentally call
- That they should call if they can and text 9-1-1 if it is safer
- To tell the call taker where they are and what is happening
Learning about 9-1-1 doesn’t have to be scary.
Patch helps children learn about emergencies in a way that is fun, memorable and age appropriate. Through conversation, activities and a few very enthusiastic high-fives, children learn that the people answering 9-1-1 are there to help.
